R-strageist are large in population and have rapid reproductions. Fish are an example of r-strageist.

Littoral zone organisms are usually found close to the shore of the sea, lake, river. A sea star is considered to be a littoral zone organism. They are mostly in the lower-mid littoral.

Ethylene is a plant hormone, but it is different from other plant hormones because it is a gas. It ripens fruit, which is why grapes is a great example.

Gymnosperm leaves do not produce flowers, which is like this plant that I have found. They are mostly needle point plants.

The Krebs cycle is a complex series of chemical reactions in cells that utilize oxygen as part of the respiration process. It produces carbon dioxide and ATP. Flowers undergo the Krebs cycle.

Gibberellins are plant hormones that regulate growth and influence development process. Plants tend to have gibberellins.

Lipids used for energy storage is in human and animals. We use the amount of lipids stored as an energy reserve.

Cellular respiration is the metabolic reactions and processes that take place inside the cells of organisms and convert biochemical energy from nutrients into ATP. All plants undergo cellular respiration.

A tomato is a genetically modified organism. The genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. The techniques are known as recombinant DNA, use DNA molecules from different sources, which are combined in a molecule to create a new set of genes.

Eubacteria is part of the six kingdoms in biology. It is basically just bacteria, and it is found inside yogurt. Eubacteria is what makes milk into yogurt.

Unicellular organisms are one-celled organisms. Yeast, which is found in bread is considered to be a single-celled organisms.

adaption of a plant is to help the plant to live and grow in different areas. The rose has thorns on its stem to help them survive in their area.

Mycelium is the part of the fungus that is vegetative part of a fungus. A mushroom has mycelium.

Glycogen is the storage form of glucose that is in animals and humans. It is stored mainly in the livers and muscles. Corn starch has glycogen in it.

Plants asexually reproduce, which is when the reproduction which an offspring arise from a single parent, and inherent the genes of one parent only.

The Hot Zone Part 4

Part 4 of The hot zone was very interesting to read because it was more about what happened after they discovered the Ebola virus. When the guy was going with the Macdonald’s he had so much courage to go inside that cave to see where the Ebola had come from. He basically risked his life going up there, and he ended up scraping the top of his head a little. It was fascinating when they were describing what was inside the cave, and how they think the cave formated. What I have learned is that not just monkeys visited inside of Kitum Cave, but multiple animals have been inside the cave. Ebola could be spreading around who knows where. I learned that in Kitum Cave it is very dry and dusty while most caves have water and are moist. There was no sign of running water inside the cave. One other thing I have learned is the rainforest are its largest reservoirs of viruses, since all living things carry viruses. The question I always have for this book is will they find a cure? Another question, will the guy at the end of the story get Ebola because he scraped his head on Kitum Cave? I have enjoyed reading this amazing book. It completely blew my mind to read all of this that actually happened.

C4 plant is when CO2 is first fixed into a compound containing four carbon atoms before entering the Calvin cycle of photosynthesis. C4 plants are well adapted to  hight daytime temperatures and intense sunlight. Corn is a great example of a C4 plant.

Phloem is the living tissue that carries organic nutrients to all the parts of the plant where it is needed. Celery stalks have vascular bundles, which includes phloem.

A rhizome is a horizontal underground stem which can send out both shoots and roots. Some have thicken areas that store starch. A bamboo plant has rhizomes.

Genetic variation is brought by mutation, a change in a chemical structure of a gene. genetic variation can be identified at a variety of levels. As you can see within the population of the fish there is a genetic variation between them.

A niche is an animal’s particular role in the environment. For instance, a dog’s niche would be its job, protecting their family, hunting, and protecting its territory.

Part three of The Hot Zone was very fascinating to me. The fact that they had to basically kills of the monkeys was crazy. The story was interesting because all of the news people would stop at nothing to find out what was going on at the monkey house. The part that I found kind of freaky was when Rhonda Williams was having the dream about the money chasing her around with the syringe. I thought it was real so I was thinking she was going to die. When they were saying that a monkey escaped was a crazy part because I really thought that someone was going to get bit. What I have learned, and I am glad that I did, is where the Ebola came from which is the Philipines. They finally gave it a name and they called it Reston. I learned that it mostly effects monkeys and it is similar to flu viruses. I have learned that the Ebola can adapt quickly to new hosts and it could change its character spontaneously. This book is so interesting to read and I have learned a lot from it. The only question I still have is will they ever find a cure?

Epithelial tissue covers the whole surface of the body. It ranges in one or more layers and is made up of cells that are closely packed. The tissue forms the covering or lining of all internal and external body. The example of epithelial tissue would be a dog’s body.

Territorial behavior is when animal is trying to defend its area. The example if the squirrel is defending its area, which is the tree.

Tropism is the way that plants react to a certain manner. For example, they way that they react to sunlight, which would be the movement or growth. The sunlight that is hitting these plants are making them move and grow.

Homeostasis is the ability of an organism or cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its psychological processes. Salt and water balance is an example of homeostasis.

hydrophobic means water-fearing, which substances are afraid of the water. It is the relationship between water and nonpolar substances. The separation of the mixture of oil and water is an example of a hydrophobic.

Hydrophilic are substances that are water loving. Such compands have an affinity to water and are usually charged or have polar side groups to their structure that will attract water. Sugar is known to be hydrophilic. Sugars contain many polar hydroxyl groups so they are quite hydrophylic.

Enzymes are protiens that catalyze chemical reactions. A banana has loads of enzymes in it that are needed to transfer its own starch into simple sugar.

Fermentation in food processing is the conversion of carbs  to alcohols and carbon dioxide or organic acids using yeasts and bacteria. cheese is a type of fermenated, dairy-based food.

Plants use mitochondria to break up carbohydrates in order to release the energy needed for making ATP

Long-day plants require fewer than a certain number of hours of darkness in each 24- hour period to induce flowering,. Potatoes are considered to be long-day plants.
