The Hot Zone: Part 4

In all honesty, I was hoping this book would’ve had a better ending. They ended up going back up to Mount Elgon to Kitum Cave so he could go through and research again.  All he came out of the cave knowing is that he found water in what he thought was a dry cave, and that elephants had carved it. After his cave visit, he visited the monkey warehouse. It had been abandoned since it had been cleaned, but he did see life. He saw a spiderweb with some of it’s prey strung along the floor.  Everything looked okay, but he said Ebola will be back. What even started this outbreak? Can you not rid of it completely? How long until it will be back? Can you really catch it airborne? This book still left me with a lot of questions.

To start off, I think the job these people have would be one of the hardest things to do. Not only are they in danger themselves, but they have to kill off hundreds of monkeys that aren’t meant to die. The Army did have a pretty smart idea on how to clean out the warehouse, but is that enough? I’m still not sure what I think about the virus. Half the time people get sick, half the time they don’t. And, it’s not always physical contact. Knowing this, is cleaning the monkey warehouse really going to help that much? Are the suits they wear really safe? They fix holes with duct tape, is that really the best way? How are they going to keep avoiding the media? What now??

To be honest, I did not like the second part of the book as much as the first. I liked more of the description in the humans and their reaction. This was more about the monkey house and finding if it truly carried Ebola. It was detailed into the description of what the virus looked like under the microscope and decisions on how to eliminate it. Some of the things i still wonder are why people are not taking more precautions to the virus’ they are researching? Why are they not warning medical fields? Is cleaning one monkey room really going to help that much? What exactly happened to the worker that had the heart attack? Are C. J. or Tom going to mention that they smelled the virus? Why is Dan taking such a vicious virus with such ease?
